A partial hospitalization program (PHP) is a comprehensive treatment program designed to help people with substance use disorders bridge the gap between inpatient and outpatient care. PHPs provide higher levels of intensity than traditional outpatient care, allowing clients to access a variety of therapeutic services. The goals of PHP are simple: to provide an intensive level of care that helps clients develop the skills and strategies they need to maintain their long-term sobriety.

The Goals of a Partial Hospitalization Program

A partial hospitalization program assists individuals with substance use disorders in returning to their daily routines. It focuses on trigger recognition, coping skills for managing cravings, and recovery techniques. With a qualified mental health team, individuals acquire the skills for long-term sobriety.

People enrolled in a PHP program typically attend therapy sessions four to five days a week and other services such as group therapy, medication management, psychoeducational, and more. This intensive structure allows individuals to focus on their recovery while also having the flexibility to return home at night.

Other goals of a partial hospitalization program include:

  • Developing healthy and positive coping strategies to manage cravings.
  • Creating an individualized treatment plan tailored to the specific needs of each client.
  • Encouraging clients to practice self-care through engaging activities such as yoga, art therapy, music therapy, and more.
  • Strengthening social networks and support systems through group therapy.
  • Assisting clients in developing coping skills to manage feelings of anxiety, depression, or stress.
  • Building self-esteem and confidence through cognitive behavioral therapy sessions.

For each person, goals may differ slightly, but the main aim is to help individuals struggling with substance use disorder gain the skills and supportive environment they need for long-term recovery. By working closely with a supportive team, individuals enrolled in partial hospitalization programs can develop the confidence and knowledge to make healthy choices and enjoy sobriety.

How Long Does a PHP Last?

Typically, a PHP lasts three to six weeks. However, the length can vary depending on each person’s needs and progress. During this time, clients are frequently assessed and monitored by their treatment team in order to determine if they are making necessary progress toward their recovery goals.

Benefits of Partial Hospitalization Programs

PHPs offer numerous benefits for participants. In addition to access to therapeutic services, including individual and group counseling sessions, partial hospitalization programs provide a safe environment for individuals with substance use disorder to focus on their recovery without the distractions of daily life.

Moreover, PHPs give individuals the opportunity to learn how to manage cravings in an environment that is free of any triggers. This can be especially beneficial for those who struggle with relapse prevention or are in the early stages of recovery. Additionally, people enrolled in a PHP program benefit from peer support and forming meaningful relationships with others on their path to sobriety.

Finally, PHPs provide individuals the opportunity to gain insight into their own behavior and habits while surrounded by a supportive and understanding team of mental health professionals.
